The heavy rain at Huntingdon was far from ideal for our runners yesterday.  Alright Chap appears to want a far firmer surface, whilst Fine Theatre’s (pictured) breathing would also be suited to better ground.

However Methodtothemagic ran a very pleasing third in the mares handicap chase, challenging the leaders at the last before being unable to quicken on the softened ground.  She jumped with great fluency and looked to be well capable of winning once she runs on a more favourable surface.

Tomorrow we have declared Lizzie Rey for the mares bumper at Southwell in the 3.35pm division.  A daughter of Kingston Hill, she is half-sister to our dual bumper winner Pop Mistress and is an attractive mare who has taken time to mature.  Hopefully she will show some promise for her patient owners.  With Finn Lambert riding for the Twiston-Davies stable, Bradley Roberts takes the ride.  Having ridden a double over the weekend, this locally based conditional is in fine form in the saddle.

The Aintree festival kicks off on Thursday and with Constitution Hill and Gold Cup runner up Bravemansgame both appearing, the meeting is as fascinating as ever.  The ground is looking safe for the big race on Saturday and hopefully all will return safe and sound.  My long-term fancy for the big race Gaillard Du Mesnil looks to have a good each-way chance despite the race looking as competitive as ever.
