Richard Phillips Racing is a professional, fun and friendly racehorse training yard based in the beautiful village of Adlestrop in the Cotswolds.

About Richard

Richard knew from a young age he wanted to train racehorses. Born near Epsom racecourse, he has fond memories of watching the horses charge past.

After working for racing greats such as Graham Thorner and Henry Candy, he set up training in 1992. Top chasers such as Time Won’t Wait, Gnome’s Tycoon and Noble Lord proved in the early years that Phillips had the skill to train at the highest level.

In 2000, Richard was rewarded for this promising start to his career by being provided with the opportunity to take over Jackdaws Castle from David Nicholson.

Following its sale in 2001, Richard took his training organisation to Adlestrop and there he has developed one of the finest training operations in the country where many winners have been produced.

Known for his extensive charity work and charismatic character, owners and staff at Adlestrop can be sure of a fun but professional experience.

The Horses

Racehorse welfare is at the heart of what we do and our horses are looked after to the highest level, with each horse’s individual training requirements met.

Richard is a Trustee of Heros Charity. Based near Wantage, Heros rehabilitates racehorses to riding horses and ensure they find excellent homes once their racing careers are over.

Awards

Richard and team pride ourselves on our professional, friendly and fun atmosphere at Adlestrop Stables.

Having reached in the final in 2019 and 2020, the team were worthy winners of the 2021 in the Lycetts Team Champions Award.  The award is for racing yards that provide a professional, safe place of work, that is inclusive and rewards staff and well as encourages learning and career progression.

We also received Gold Accreditation in the Leadership Award categories:

  • Safe Working Environment
  • Reward and Recognition
  • Development & Training
  • Recruitment & Induction

In 2021 we had three finalists and two winners in different categories of the Godolphin Stud and Stable Stable Awards.  A fantastic achievement due to the excellent team we have here at Adlestrop Stables.

“We decided to switch our horse from the flat to National Hunt and go with a trainer who was good with horses, looks after them well and is forthright in his assessment of a horse’s ability. This was important to us for all we have dreams but we need a dose of reality. Richard and his team give us that but also ensure that we have every chance in no matter what grade of race we run in. He is a winner and wants his owners to share that thrill. His welcoming of you when you visit the yard is second to none.”

MICHAEL CHITTY, SERENDIPITY SYNDICATE

“Having had horses with Richard since 1999 continuously 75% have won! Any special requests for your horse you may have, are always welcome at Adlestrop and if possible accommodated. Adlestrop Stables is a 5 star horse hotel with lovely facilities where there is always a warm welcome whatever time of day.”

COLIN POCOCK, SOLE OWNER

“What I like about being an owner at Adlestrop, is the personal touch you get from Richard and the team, the sense of fun that being involved in racing is really all about, and the knowledge that at a moment’s notice you can pop in to see the horses, go on the gallops, and actually feel part of a vibrant racing stable.”

JOHN INVERDALE

“The mere thought of being involved in the ownership of a race horse can be daunting but Richard and his team at Adlestrop make it easy and through syndication, affordable but most of all horse racing is an entertainment and you can be sure of that at Adlestrop. We would have no hesitation in recommending Richard and all at Adlestrop whether as a first timer or an experienced owner.”

TONY & CAROLINE ASHALL, ADLESTROP CLUB & PARTNERSHIP

“It is a real joy to be an owner at Adlestrop, you receive regular updates on your horse/s and Richard is always available to speak to you. The team at Adlestrop are always welcoming and every owner is made to feel special. Meeting up with other owners at the regular gatherings is always good fun and Jo and the team make fabulous bacon butties which are always welcome after an early morning on the gallops watching and hearing Richard’s lively comments on the horses.”

ANN SAUNDERS

“Nothing is too much trouble for Richard or Joline to see that you enjoy ownership, and when visiting you are always made very welcome. The staff and horses are very happy and there is a lovely atmosphere. Owners are always kept very well informed as to the wellbeing of their horse, and given plenty of notice of when and where their horse may run. They are always welcome to visit. Also the social events are really good and there is always a very friendly group of people to socialise with.”
