Fighting Poet has been declared in the 3.25pm at Brighton tomorrow – the mile and a half handicap. He ran an excellent second at Epsom last time out and although it’s a tough race for the grade hopefully he will handle the track. They are due some rain in the morning which will be a help and the very talented Billy Loughnane takes the ride for The Adlestrop Club.
Thank you to everyone who supported our charity cricket match yesterday which was in aid of Racing Welfare. A Phillips XI took on a jockeys team captained by Finn Lambert. Amongst their team were jockeys Tom Scudamore and Stan Sheppard who both have and talent for the sport. However the Phillips team captained by nephew Sebastian Phillips were victorious thanks to an excellent innings from Ryan Kilmister who was bravely backed up by excellent contributions from Marcus and Arty Armytage plus an in-form J Dadswell.
The ‘Mick Barnes Trophy’ for player of the match was between three of the youngest players on the pitch and although great nephew Willoughby Phillips and Jack Hardwick made great contributions, it was Oliver, Jack’s brother who won the trophy thanks to a delicious late cut to the boundary and a wicket with his first ball.
It was particularly pleasing as Oliver and Jack are nephews of Luke Watson whose family once again supported the day with the match being held annually in his memory.
Around £1000 was raised for Racing Welfare and thanks to all who came along to support and buy raffle tickets and auction prizes. Many thanks to Adlestrop Cricket Club – a beautiful part of Britain and long may it continue to give us special summer days.
Sad news of Howard Wright’s death at the age of 79 last week. He was a Doncaster lad who had bags of nouse and for many years wrote with great eloquence on many subjects in the Racing Post. I always enjoyed our chats together and he was a force for good and he will be remembered fondly.
