The third horse in ‘My Racing Life’ is a mare few would have probably heard of, Jouvencelle. Most trainers started their career by exercising horses and would probably admit to having more job satisfaction as the teacher rather than the headmaster.
Jouvencelle just code the nod over a mare called Collide, who was a fruity character to say the least and was also trained by Henry Candy. She would fly leap at any time and at anything and it was very pleasing that she won her debut race having been weighed down by yours truly in the previous months.
However Jouvencelle was the first racehorse I bonded with. A daughter of Rusticaro, she showed little form on her only run as a two-year-old having been weak and backward. Owned by Raymond and Jenny Mould who I would later train winners for, she was second on numerous occasions and failed to win. However she always had a touch of class and she went on to breed many good flat and National Hunt horses including Land Afar, Hatta Breeze, Valiant Warrior, Picket Piece, Full Minty and Damoiselle. The latter trio I trained to win from Jackdaws Castle.
She was a beautiful dark brown mare with a very athletic build and my association with her has given me great pleasure over the years.
