Had an enjoyable trip to Ireland at the end of last week, with one racing’s most famous owners – Mick Barnes. We visited Ballyhane Stud in County Carlow, run by Joe Foley who stands Dandy Man. Barnsy has had a fixation with buying a Dandy Man offspring for several years and it was good to see both the stallion and some of his yearlings that are going to the sales.
I have known Joe for some time and he is a real character and it was good to catch up with him and the champion trainer, Willie Mullins on Thursday evening in their local.
They are both great company and enjoyed Barnsy keeping the pace with them. Mullins has Rich Richie, Phillips has Skint Skinty.
Great to go to the Dublin horse show for the first time in forty years on Friday, on the way home. Many of racing’s great and good were there, including Tattersalls Chairman – Edmond Mahoney showing off his middle weight hunter.
Congratulations to Jamie Spencer on riding 2000 winners during the Shergar Cup on Saturday. Jamie rode a Listed winner for us at Brighton on Averted View, many years ago and is a gifted horseman.
Enjoyed the World Athletics Championships and well done to Brendan Foster on an outstanding commentary career. He was an inspirational runner to me in the seventies and those that know would remember that my running style was very similar.
He has had a huge influence on sport and has achieved much.
