Two seconds over the weekend with Bertie Barnes and Celestial Magic.  Bertie ran a cracker at Kempton on Friday in the handicap hurdle.  If he’d have jumped the last, he probably would have won – however the step up in trip has suited him and I’m sure that Mick Barnes and all his owners are going to have some great fun with him.

Barnsy was in a state of shock after the race but never has a second been celebrated so well and the profits at The Fox at Oddington definitely increased on Friday night.

Celestial Magic ran his usual game race at Warwick on Saturday and confirmed the form with Wildmoor Boy having beaten him previously on his last run at the track.  However we had to give a stone to the winner and as much as ‘Monty’ tried, he was unable to do so.  We look forward to stepping him up in trip on some better ground in March and he really deserves all the success he can get as he tries so hard and is so consistent.

We have Master Vintage entered at Sandown on Friday, where he will attempt to follow up on his Leicester win.  He has gone up in the handicap by nine pounds but hopefully the track will suit and he was narrowly beaten there on his first run in a handicap.

A fascinating weekend of Festival trials with Altior looking a machine and a banker in the Arkle.  Whilst Native River certainly looks on the up and is a live Gold Cup contender.  Sizing John won yesterday for Jessie Harrington.  Ironically Jessie and I were show judges at Doncaster in 2003, when we selected Sizing John’s mother as show champion.  He certainly looks as though he has each-way claims whatever race he runs in at the Festival.
