Not much rain in Adlestrop, therefore jumping horses in the outdoor school at present helping to keep their eye in for the racetrack.
It was great to be a guest of owner Simon Tindall yesterday in his box at Lords for the opening test against South Africa. It was a fascinating day with new captain Joe Root, turning the game around to a possible England victory.
It’s great to see a young English sportsman yet to develop any demons. Simon’s box is always fun with Sir Michael Stoute and JA McGrath amongst his guests. It was great to watch cricket on the balcony with fellow sporting greats, such as Ernie Els and K Pieterson.
Interesting to read Tom Kerr’s article in today’s Racing Post with reference to banning the whip. Whether racing likes it or not, he makes some valid points and many in the sport do not realise that to the outside world, our game can look a fairly cruel one in the closing stages of races.
However at some stage the sport will have to either accept that it will not attract huge public support or fight off the antis. I always thought it quite ironic that Lester Piggot was the housewives choice, yet Lester was possibly renowned for being strongest in a finish.
One of the greatest horsemen of our time, J Francome, has always advocated the banning of it yet not everyone can ride as well as he.
A difficult subject but one that inevitably in these changing times, will have to be broached.
