So sad to hear of the passing of both Liam Treadwell and Rose Paterson.  I did not know Liam well but he was always a wonderfully polite, quiet man who was an excellent horseman and none more so than the day he won the Grand National on Mon Mome.

A very popular member of the weighing room, he was one of the regiment’s reliable soldiers and his sad death will be felt throughout racing.

Rose Paterson was an inspirational lady who rose to prominence in racing as Aintree’s chairman.  Wife of MP Owen, her intelligence, wit and charm were so clearly evident when in her presence.

She was devoted to good causes and was an archetypal ‘doer’.  A visionary, she could see the upcoming importance in racing of horse welfare and would have been a vital addition to the ever important subject in the years ahead.

I last saw her at a local get together to discuss Aintree’s plans for the future.   As elegant and easy going as ever, she conducted the evening proceedings surrounded by some of the trickiest trainers around.  She would have made a fine foreign secretary.

She will be a great loss to all and our thoughts are with her family and friends at this sad time.
