J Gaye ran a fine race in her first handicap at Newbury last night. Run at a strong pace, she was out-paced turning in before coming back on the bridle with three to run. She stayed on well in the final furlong and looks as though she needs a bit further.
Also, a bit of juice in the ground would help so we will aim to run her again in September and October before letting her mature further. She will certainly jump a hurdle in time and looks as though she’ll give her owners a lot of fun in the future.
On a hot evening, she took the preliminaries very well and well done to Newbury for making the cooling down process so efficient.
It was good to see so many of my former colleagues at the races last night including many former Henry Candy employees. Chris Rutter and Richard Westropp are both stipendiary stewards with the former actually riding us a winner at Newbury on Danegold a few years ago. Also my deputy assistant, Mike Waring who is now in charge of race planning – so he got a lot of stick as ever.
