Things didn’t quite go to plan at Warwick yesterday with Totterdown.  He has always been a bit of a handful and dislodged Danny going out onto the course.

Although not running far, he dislodged a rail at speed and veterinary advice was  to withdraw him.  We will aim to go to Huntingdon next week with him and come up with a different strategy.

It was great to welcome Debbie Grey from NARS on Monday.  The National Association of Racing Staff are doing an excellent job on their behalf and it was great for Debbie to come and explain the progress they are making on behalf of their members.

The team really appreciated the discussion and we look forward to creating a positive network of racing staff in the area.  People such as Lambourn legend Doreen Rackham, would have often organised staff events and there was a tremendous sense of community thanks to such inspired people.

With so many trainers in the Cotswolds, it would be good to try and repeat such activities.

Congratulations to Richard Johnson on his remarkable feat of riding 3500 winners.  I explained to him I was only just over 3000 winners behind him but as he points out, I have more time on my side than he does.  Hopefully.

Sad to hear the news of the death of Sam Morshead.  Sam was a remarkable character whose riding career was very much part of my childhood, having ridden many of Rimell’s great horses.

Partly due to having a bang or two on the head, Sam was an eccentric and fun character who progressed Scottish racing with his remarkable support at Perth racecourse.

He lived with enthusiasm and although having been seriously ill for some time, showed enormous determination and inspiration in his final years.  He is one racing man the sport will not forget.
